Is shopping considered a hobby? If it is, it’s definitely one of mine. However, fast fashion has proved to be a leading cause of environmental pollution. This doesn’t come as a surprise as the quick trends set by hot celebs are out just as fast as they were in. In a world with quick trends, how can we continue to shop sustainably? We can start with the three Rs; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Reduce shopping at fast fashion retailers with unsustainable practises, reuse clothing by shopping at second hand retailers such as Value Village, and recycle your old clothing in practical ways or by donating them to reputable sources or friends and family. Now, I know it’s not practical to completely cut out shopping at your favourite stores and that’s not what I’m saying, but every effort to avoid unsustainable retailers makes a difference.
Thrifting has quickly become one of my favourite ways to find unique and vintage pieces and a great way to follow the waves of fashion trends that have made a comeback, all while avoiding fast fashion retailers.
Here are some of my thrifting tips I’ve learned over the years!
1. Location, location, location
Location can play a huge part in what you find at the thrift store. I love my local thrift store but try visiting different locations near you. Neighbourhoods in the downtown core can lead to cool finds and higher end brands.
2. Make a shopping list
Have a list of clothing items you are looking for. Find some inspiration on Pinterest or TikTok before you go. Going into a thrift store not knowing what you are looking for can be overwhelming. Having a list in mind gives you a place to start!
3. Try the Men’s section
The men’s section is where I’ve found my best thrifted items. Oversized cute sweaters here!
4. Think and try before you buy
I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve had a few impulse buys at the thrift store. This just puts me back in the cycle of buying more clothes that sit in my closet until I purge items that I don’t wear. Go thrifting with sufficient time, not when you’re in a time crunch. Take the time, put things you love in your cart and then sort through all your finds at the end. Ask yourself, will you actually wear this? Try on your items if fitting rooms are available and most thrifts have a return policy (may involve store credit) if you’re having buyers remorse!
5. Go when its not crowded
Want a mid-week pick me up? Try thrifting on a weekday after work when it’s less busy as opposed to weekends. You’ll be able to shop in peace and look through the racks without the crowd.
Thrifting can be so fun and is an eco-conscious way to shop. Next time you need a new outfit, opt to go thrifting rather than your favourite fast fashion retailer!
