Faith over feelings.
Sometimes we as Christians might undermine the power of prayer and the access we have to talk to God through Jesus. We don’t have to go through life alone. We can lean on God and lay our burdens at his feet. What a relief! I could not do this life on my own strength, but the good news is- we don’t have to. Come to God through prayer. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7)
Our prayers are heard by God. Although sometimes we might not feel like God hears us, we might not always feel like God is near us and we might not always be able to hear God back- he is always with you. This is where we have to rely on our faith as opposed to how we feel.
What to pray about
Our God is a caring God. He cares about how you feel, your worries (big and small), your struggles, the highs and the lows. You can be candid with God. Often I find that my mind is constantly running through my thoughts, thinking about how I feel. But instead of keeping those thoughts to yourself in your own mind- God wants you to bring that to Him. He wants you to have daily conversation with Him. Involve Him in what you’re thinking and how you’re feeling- even in the mundane moments and routines of life.
This doesn’t always come easy. Often I find myself going through my day and the busyness of life only to realize that by the end of the day- I didn’t even think about God let alone talk to Him.
How can we remind ourselves to talk to God daily?
- Breathe Prayers: Re-connect with God in the midst of your day with a short but intentional meditation prayer. It can be a simple line that allows you to give praise to God, remember that you can do all things through His strength or to simply thank Him for his goodness, mercy and faithfulness.
- Reminders: Set daily reminders on your phone or calendar throughout your day to connect with God.
- Quiet time: Devote your mornings or nights before bed to spend time with God through prayer and in His word. Learn more about how to create a quiet time routine here.
- Prayer journal: Write out your prayers to God in a journal. This may help you sort out your thoughts and will also allow you to see how God has moved in your life in answering your prayers as you look back on your journal entries.
- Accountability partner: Keep yourself and a friend accountable by checking in on each other to ensure that you have taken the time to pray today. Use this as an opportunity to pray for your friend as well and share your prayer requests.
This life was never promised to be easy. But God did promise that we didn’t have to do it alone. The Holy Spirit lives in us. We have a relationship with God through Jesus. God asks that we bring our burdens to him (Matthew 11:28). He asks us to pray persistently. Seek God’s grace in prayer. Give thanks through prayer. Receive God’s incomprehensible peace through prayer and release your anxieties and worries (Phil 4:6). Believe that God hears your prayer and will receive His blessings (Mark 11:24). Remember that God’s plan will always prevail- He is in control and will use all things for His good.
