Romance: Pack Up the Moon by Kristin Higgins
This was the ultimate romance novel that broke my heart, made me cry but left me appreciating and cherishing love in all ways. This romance novel is unlike others. It takes you through a heartbreaking story about love, loss, living in the present and cherishing the people you love. This is a book to be weary about reading in public, leaving me in tears as I commuted to work. This book walks us through a newly widowed man, grieving the loss of his beloved wife, as we get glimpses into their love story while looking forward to the future as he tries to move on.
Adventure: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
This book may be my new favourite book. A book unique and different from my usual picks but full of adventure, family, betrayal and romance. This book takes us through the reality and survival needed to be living in rural Alaska with a family with deep hurt and toxic cycles beneath the surface. The novel stars a young girl, Leni, as she follows her parents into “The Great Alone,” picking up their life and learning how to survive the Alaskan wilderness. Through loss, romance and survival, Leni takes us through an adventure.
Non-fiction: The Life Council
This book teaches us something engrained in us since we were young- how to be a good friend. A lesson we continually need to learn and be intentional about as we grow up and our seasons change. How can we be a good friend to others? What kind of friends do you need in y our life council? Who do you need in your circle of friends to be your community? Read more here on how this book transformed the way I look at my closest friendships and appreciate my relationships for what they are and the value they add to my life.
Mystery: All Good People Here by Ashley Flower
A story that leads to a murder mystery, an unresolved death that leaves a town in uncertainty. All along, the answers lied closer than we thought. This unresolved murder peeks the interest of a young journalist who seeks answers and digs up the truth that everyone else seemed to have brushed under the rug. This book kept me on my toes, with a shocking and unpredictable ending.
Although there have been many good reads this year, these top four books have left me wanting more! That being said- there are still a few months left in the year to find more books to add to the must-read list. Happy reading!
