Maximize Your Productivity and Increase Your Motivation
What you define as your workspace might look different these days. It could be your desk at home, it could be the couch, it could even be your bed. Maybe you’re back at work full-time now. Wherever your workspace(s) is/are, how can we organize our environment to help us feel more motivated and productive?
Especially in a hybrid world, separating work from life has increasingly become a challenge when our commute to work is simply 5 steps down the hall from our bedroom (or again, maybe it is our bedroom). Creating a functional environment with minimal clutter and distractions and where things are in their place can contribute to your productivity. An organized workspace can bring a sense of calm refresh and creativity. Your space can be a reflection of how you feel. If your space is dark and messy, your mind can easily reflect that. I know when my room is in a chaotic state in the middle of the week, I don’t feel motivated and more so feel like staying in bed. Follow these tips to create a space of productivity and creativity in your workspace at home or at work.
1. Have a designated workspace
This tip is mostly applicable for those with hybrid or remote roles. Pick a designated space in your home to be your workspace. Avoid working from your bed or from the couch but sit at a desk or table. If your workspace impacts your productivity, your bed or couch may not be the best options as well as it doesn’t allow you to create a hard line of separation from work and relaxation and rest. When choosing your ideal workspace, consider natural lighting as sun may bring you a little more joy into your day. Consider a secluded space away from your bedroom and living space and distractions (people & pets). Working from a desk, although not as comfortable as your bed, will force you to get up, and will help your mind associate work and productivity with your designated workspace.
2. Declutter
A clean space is a happy place, at least that’s how I feel. The first thing I do on weekends on Saturday morning is get up- and clean the house. It’s the most dreadful task at times but the most rewarding to have a clean space. De-clutter your workspace to minimize your distractions. Have only the necessities you need to work on your desk (although, some desk décor never hurt anyone). Find designated spots for your items, whether that be in the drawer, on the shelf or on your desk.
3. Clean and Maintain
The most important step to de-cluttering is maintaining your organization system. Every day after work- take 2 minutes to tidy up your space and make sure that things are put back in their spot to start with a fresh space tomorrow morning. Do a deeper clean weekly to dust, vacuum and organize.
4. Comfy but Practical
Although working from your bed is not ideal from a productivity point of view, you can still create a comfortable workspace. Ergonomics is also another important factor to consider. We are often sitting for long periods of time staring at a screen, so comfort is important! Start with scoping out a comfortable chair. Ensure that you have adequate back and neck rest. Look into purchasing a wrist rest for your keyboard and mouse. As mentioned earlier, lighting is important, so you are not staring at a screen in the dark. Add cozy elements such as a blanket and footstool.
Creating a space you enjoy and thrive to work in is important. We spend hours of our days and weeks working, so prioritize working in a space that not only brings you joy and is comfortable but also maximizes your productivity.
